Agribusiness

In the field of agribusiness, Rausser while at the Harvard Business School (HBS) generated a study on the complete U.S. corn system, evaluating the supply chain all the way from inputs at the field level through the ultimate consumption of variety of corn derived products (Rausser 1979) developed a number of decision support systems for agribusiness entities and in particular, agricultural marketing boards in less-developed countries (Rausser and Yassour 1979; Rausser and Yassour 1979). Perhaps a major effort on agribusiness was preparing case studies for MBA course instructions. The process of developing these case studies were to visit with specify agribusiness companies, interviewing the founder, the entrepreneur, responsible for execution, and specify a number of choices both strategic and tactical that such firms were considering. During his time on the Harvard faculty, there were 36 case studies that were developed along with supporting materials for analytical assessments to be made in a second-year agribusiness MBA course. More recently, this earlier work is the basis for joint efforts with Rachael Goodhue on value differentiation within the agribusiness industries focusing largely on hogs and poultry (Goodhue and Rausser 2001; Goodhue and Rausser 1999; Goodhue and Rausser 2003)
